Hailed an “exquisitely subtle pianist” by The New York Times, Taiwanese-American pianist Iris Hsu Shiotsuki is a top prizewinner of the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, Baltimore Music Club, Pacific Musical Society, and Ross McKee Competitions. As an active solo and chamber musician, she has performed across the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, and Spain, at major venues including The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Embassy of Singapore in Washington, D.C., and the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts in California.

 

Iris' recital appearances have taken her to the International Holland Music Sessions, Banff Centre, Gijon International Piano Festival, Zephyr International Chamber Music Festival, and Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Her collaborative artistry has given her the opportunity to perform alongside eminent musicians including Nicholas Kitchen (Borromeo String Quartet), Keng-Yuen Tseng, and Julia Yang (Merz Trio).

 

Iris holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and received her Master of Music degree in piano performance from The Juilliard School. She has been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with many renowned artist-pedagogues, including her long-time mentor Boris Slutsky, as well as Matti Raekallio, Leon Fleisher, Ann Schein, Li-Shan Hung, and Robert McDonald.

 

Iris served as Professor of Piano Pedagogy at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2022, as well as Piano Minor Faculty at Juilliard from 2011-2013. From 2016-2020, she was a staff pianist for the New England Conservatory of Music, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts. Since 2019, she has also been invited to serve as collaborative faculty at the Heifetz International Music Institute in Staunton, Virginia and the Conservatory Audition Workshop in Burlington, Vermont.

 

Now based in Los Angeles, California and in high demand as an educator, she leads an award-winning private teaching studio, while also teaching and coaching at the college level as a full-time staff pianist at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In addition, she is Associate Resident Piano Faculty at the Opus119 School of Music, and volunteers as Vice President and Board Member for the Whittier Branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California.
